What Can You Bet On Online?

Online gambling is any type of gambling conducted online. This includes casinos, poker and online sports betting. The first online gambling site opened for the public, was lottery ticketing from Las Vegas, Nevada, in October 1994. Online gambling has exploded over the past decade. In fact, many countries have either legalized online gambling or have enacted legislation encouraging state legalized gambling.

In the United States, both states – Connecticut and Delaware – as well as the District of Columbia, are completely legalized and allow online gambling. The controversy centers on the U.S. Conference of American Liquor Commission which oversees interstate gambling. The U.S. Congress, through the House and Senate, passed H Interstate Betting Enforcement Act, or the Wire Act, which is intended to prevent the enforcement by other states of their anti-gambling laws inconsistent with the US Wire Act. Currently, only three states (Delaware, New Hampshire and Massachusetts) have concurrent laws prohibiting online gambling. The two most recent proposed concurrent laws in Congress would eliminate the three state maximum laissez faire status and instead regulate internet gambling like regular gambling. The Wire Act is currently divided among different provisions dealing with online gaming, its licensure and regulation, consumer protection and records.

The U.S. Department of Justice, which is part of the Department of Homeland Security, has threatened to file a lawsuit against a state if that state attempts to enforce its laws against online gambling. Most states have blanket laws against gambling and non-betting upon an individual. The Wire Act also makes it illegal to transfer funds to an individual from an internet gambling account. However, some states allow wagering upon a game of skill or an event, without requiring a license. Some states allow video gambling, also without a license.

A similar situation exists with online casinos. In Las Vegas, a person can gamble from anywhere in the world on any type of gambling device or service. With that said, there are still some restrictions in place. In the State of Nevada, online gambling, whether conducted through an internet or software interface, is considered an illegal activity. Gambling money transfers to Las Vegas are strictly prohibited.

There are many debates over the legality of online gambling. Some portions of the country (including the Internal Revenue Service) believe that all gambling activity is illegal. Gambling happens all around the world, from online card games to live wagering at live events like basketball and football games. Just like traditional casinos, online gambling sites do not report customer information and cannot be accessed or checked for legal reasons. This doesn’t mean, though, that everyone who plays at an online casino, while breaking the law, is actually doing so illegally.

Gambling can be legalized or banned in different countries, depending on each jurisdiction’s laws and the views of local residents. However, the United States government has not taken a stance on online gambling at this time. There have been studies that suggest a correlation between gaming and youth violence. Though it is difficult to measure this correlation scientifically, it is important to remember that the United States currently allows online gambling. Whether or not it should be legalized remains a topic for debate.
